Kids' Activities in Winter Park, Colorado
Posted: March 22, 2019
Where will you spend your next family vacation? Toting your tots through a bustling city? Waiting in line at a popular theme park? Or would you rather enjoy the majesty of the Colorado landscape? If Winter Park is your pick, take a look at the top kid-friendly activities to try during your next family vacation.
Older kids, tweens, and teens will enjoy getting to play the role of cowboy or cowgirl for the day, and they have plenty of trail ride options throughout and nearby the Winter Park area. Booking a guided ride provides the whole family with a way to spend time together outside in nature. You'll get to take in the scenic vistas while the kiddos ride the day away.
Hay or Carriage Rides
If sitting on a saddle isn't your child's idea of fun, getting pulled behind a horse drawn carriage or hay ride is a similar outdoor alternative. Take advantage of a sunny vacation day, tour the area, and slow down with this old-time type of transportation.
Keep the equine theme going with a trip to a nearby rodeo. This is a true treat for city or suburban kids who have never experienced the excitement of a live rodeo. The High Country Stampede Rodeo, located in Fraser, operates in July and August annually. Along with the regular events, enjoy special kids' activities—such as Mutton Bustin' and the Calf Scramble.
The Middle Park Fair and Rodeo is another close option. For more than a century, Colorado residents and visitors have enjoyed everything that this annual August event has to offer. Check out barrel races, horse races, and livestock exhibitions. The fair/rodeo also includes a special family day, featuring activities such as bounce houses and a bungee trampoline.
Skiing and Snowboarding
What better to do in the winter months than ski or snowboard the slopes? Winter Park Resort started with a single rope tow in 1939, but now includes 21 lifts that serve more than 2,700 acres over four mountains. With 134 trails, you'll find something for every family member to ski with ease.
If your family is new to skiing/snowboarding, sign-up for a lesson. The resort offers classes and private lessons for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and skill levels. Daily kids' programs also include all-day supervision, lunch, and playtime.
Adventure-seeking tweens and teens can snowboard the resort's terrain parks. Beginners can build skills at Starter Park (which features smaller rails). More advanced snowboarders can check out Rail Yard and its Superpipe.
After a day on the snow, spend some time on a slicker surface. Winter Park Resort offers daily ice-skating sessions during the ski season at the outdoor Village Ice Rink. Don't worry about toting along your own skates, you can rent a pair for each family member at the rink.
Along with open skating, visitors to the rink can take free lessons on weekends between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.
What happens when your adventure-enthusiast family heads to Colorado for a summer vacation? The skiing and snowboarding season has wrapped, making downhill, rail, and trail adventures a no-go. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of awesome options. Mountain bike your way across Winter Park, getting outdoors in an adventurous way.
Trestle Bike Park offers miles of rides and has the largest bike rental fleet in the U.S. Take the Mountain E-Bike Tour (a three-hour bike tour), schedule a private lesson, or register for one of the many seasonal races.
